Marathons, Bootcamp, Insanity ...Don't Stop Now!

Hey guys! Happy Don't Stop Now Wednesday! Did you survive Double Whammy Tuesday (double up your reps & go twice as hard) aka Torture Tuesday? We want to hear all about it!

We just wanted to say how much we appreciate the awesome feedback from you guys - we're so glad you're taking time out of your busy day to check out our blog. We're learning so much about you and we're also excited about sharing our thoughts with you :)

This past week, me and V have actually been keeping busy with introducing new routines into our workouts. We've finally decided to bite the bullet and start...*drumroll*...Insanity! The main reaction we've been getting from our friends is "WHY?!"

Well, we'll tell you why. It incorporates our LEAST favourite things: plyometrics, cardio, and circuit training. All at once. But, we've learned over the year that we need to get out of our comfort zones in order to really maximize our workouts, yada yada..yes we all know that. But what's really pushing us is we need a change, something different, challenging, and we are SO READY! V started the program this Monday and I will be starting next month. One problem we've run into so far is that we can't do the program together (opposite work schedules), so I've been trying to be as motivating as I can..i.e. putting myself through 2 DailyHiit videos/day (3 rounds each) & texting her the occasional "go kill it girl!".

The good thing for me though, hearing what V has to say about the program is prepping me for it (and also for any of you who are also considering going through with it, kudos to you!). Some of her feedback so far:

The Good
  • Shaun T is not annoying! Hurrah!!! He's actually the complete opposite: energetic, encouraging, pushes you through it, and gives you the confidence you need to finish. Having a good instructor is super important when deciding which program to follow. All the eye candy in the videos don't hurt either ;)
  • you can definitely feel the results. After following this program religiously for 2 months, you will definitely be a fitter version of yourself now. You will just know that, right after Day 1. It is just that insane.
The Not-So-Good
  • the schedule is 6 days a week so it doesn't leave you time to do your other workouts.
  • you'll have to do weight training in addition to this program.
V's current schedule: Insanity 6 days/week, running 4-5 times/week, strength training 3-4 times/week.
L's current schedule: DailyHIIT 4-5 times/week, running 2-3 times/week, strength training & pilates 3-4 times/week.

On top of that, we fit in the occasional bootcamp class at MMA World Academy or hot yoga at Moksha Yoga. Treating ourselves to a fun class together at the end of the week gives us something to look forward to!

@MMA World Academy

You might ask why we're running on top of doing all the other routines. The reason is because we're feeling ambitious and training for 1 or 2 races this year. We haven't picked which ones yet, but here's the list. We're thinking Toronto Yonge Street 10k, Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, Goodlife Fitness Toronto, or CIBC Run for the Cure...What do you guys think? Which ones? or should we do them all? ;) (ha ha..that was a joke...).

Just a thought: Maybe one day we'll be able to do the Coastal Challenge: 250k along the coast of Costa Rica..amazeballs.

Keep us updated! What's your current workout schedule? How are you spending #Don'tStopNowWednesday? Tweet us @citychixfitness or leave a comment, we  hearing from you :)

xoxo

  4. Love the Insanity review. Sounds good yet intimidating. Your schedules ... yup, insane describes it

  5. Just wanted to drop by and ask how the Insanity is going? I heard that it can be really damaging for the joints (because of constant jumps, ups and downs, etc). I have sensitive knees. How are you feeling about it?

    1. Hey Irina! I have sensitive knees as well and I find that there are some moves that put extra pressure on my joints. What eases the strain for me is doing modified versions of the moves. For the most part, the majority of the workout consists of exercises that do not cause any pain during or post-workout. Are you thinking about starting Insanity?

  6. I am thinking of starting it! But I had problems with some joints before and I don't want to aggravate it. But I guess you can modify as you say. I would love to hear a review from you guys on both Insanity and P90X.

    1. I've tried both and I prefer Insanity over P90X. Both programs focus on strength training in different ways: Insanity through bodyweight exercises and P90X through weight training. For Insanity, each DVD workout targets your whole body, it is much more intense and convenient because you don't need to buy any equipment. Plus, Shaun T is really good at motivating you. P90X is harder to do because you need to buy certain equipment - pull-up bar being one of them, each DVD targets a different muscle group and it is much slower paced. Also, you need to add cardio to the program.

The only problem with Insanity is that it is hard to stick with because the program is 6 days a week. What sane person wants to get their butt kicked everyday, willingly?! It was hard to fit in any other activity I enjoyed doing, like running and weight training. So, I've adjusted the program to make it more manageable by fitting it into my workout schedule only 3 times a week. I've seen the best physical results from Insanity than any other workout program I've done before.

Let us know which program you choose and keep up posted on your results!
